Instructors

Request a play session in the library or in your own classroom.

The Hesburgh Library has made 8 copies of The Social Justice Game available through circulation.

Instructors may borrow copies of the game to have their students play in several of our Library classrooms. First-time instructors sometimes request a librarian help facilitate student play, though this is not required.

1

Introduce students to the game | Optional
Ask your students to watch the introductory video (coming soon) that explains how to set up and play the game.

2

Reserve a library classroom for your visit
Describe your course and requirements so we may reserve a Library classroom for you. The Library cannot guarantee classrooms. Please do this as early as you can in the semester to ensure a classroom will be available at the requested date and time.

3

Visit the library and borrow game boards

Visit the Hesburgh Library with your class on the arranged date. Head to the lower level Circulation Desk to check out the game boards.

We recommend instructors borrow approximately 1 game board for every 4-6 students. Generally, classes with 16-24 students should borrow 4 game boards. If no one is present at the desk, visit the first floor Circulation desk for assistance.

4

Find your library classroom and play SJG

Find your assigned Library classroom. Arrange the classroom tables to accommodate game tables of 4-6 players, with 4 players being the optimal number. As you increase the number of players per table, increase the number of players playing the Unemployed or Employee roles.

4-player Table

# Roles
1 Owner
1 Manager
1 Employee
1 Unemployed

5-player Table

# Roles

1 Manager
1 Employee
2 Unemployed

6-player Table

A typical play session for a 50 | 75 min class might look like:

Watch Explainer Video Optional Outside of class, have students watch a brief explainer on the game.
Unbox the game 5 min Students unpack the games during instructor announcements.
Play 30 | 50 min Students play the game in groups of approximately 4-6 students.
Discussion 10 | 15 min Post-play, in-class discussion.
Re-box the game 5 min Students re-box the games before leaving class.
Written Reflection Optional Outside of class, students reflect on their play in writing within the framework of terms and concepts explored in your class.

5

Box up the game boards and return them to circulation
Have each game table begin boxing up the game pieces during the post-play discussion. Please make sure all the pieces are accounted for, and return them to the Circulation Desk.

6

Help improve the educational experience | Optional
Instructors feedback makes the game a better experience for students and is sincerely welcome.

An instructor may request a librarian bring copies of the game to their classroom and help facilitate student play. However, classroom visits are limited by librarian availability. When available, we can accommodate courses of at least 50 - 120 minutes and with approximately 25 or fewer students.
